Panteli Castle

The castle stands on top of Pityos hill, on the northeast side of Leros, at an altitude of about 600 meters above the sea. In 1087, the Castle was given to Saint Christodoulos who is also the founder of the Monastery of Saint Theologian at Patmos. The four coats of arms on the fortification are a testimony of the Knights occupation of the island who were also interested in repairing the castle. On the west side of the fortress there is the Church of Our Lady, perhaps built in the 18th century, with important paintings of worship. In the center of the castle you will see the Church of Frangoklissia. During the Italian occupation which started in 1912, the castle started being used as barracks and observation post.

You can reach the Castle by car as the paved road takes you all the way to the entrance. However, you will have to continue on foot from this point onwards.
