Paleokastro

The Castle is built at an altitude of 58 m. above the plain of Xirokampos. It is also known as Paleokastro and it has been associated with the Castle of Lepides. When emperor Alexios Komninos gave the Castle of Pandeli to Saint Christodoulos, he also gave the Castle of Lepides to the inhabitants of Leros, who used it as a shelter against the attacks of enemies. Based on the remains of the fortification that we can still see nowadays, the castle dates back to the Hellenistic period or maybe even the Middle Byzantine period or the period of the Knights. Inside the fortifications you can still see the preserved post-Byzantine church dedicated to Virgin Mary.
