The Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi

The Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi or Panagia Kalamiotissa is located over the narrow isthmus separating the main island from the peninsula of Kalamos. It is built over the eminent ancient temple of Apollo Aeglitis, which was connected to the town by the cobblestone Iera Odos (parts of which can still be seen today). Quite high sections of the walls of the temple itself, and its peribolos have been preserved and incorporated into the peribolos of the modern-day Monastery.

The Monastery has functioned as a destination of pilgrimage since the times of Turkish rule and is well-known to everyone in Greece. The island's most important religious feast takes place there on September 7th-8th.
