Within a few minutes’ walk from Apoikia village, you will find the beautiful cataracts of Pythara. It is an incredible habitat with dense vegetation and an abundance of water that creates small lakes and waterfalls. Aquatic life thrives in this area and many birds and amphibians find shelter there. The water comes from Mount Petalo, which is located in the region of Evrousies, and the estuary is at Gialia Beach. Pythara is used to irrigate fields and from 1863 till 1936 its waters were used as a power source for the biggest watermill of the Balkans called “Fabrika” near Stenies village.
