Karababa Castle

The location of the Castle is related to the ancient city Kanithos as traces of buildings and tombs have been found there, on the soil surface. The hill was fortified for the first time during the Roman period, but was definitely not fortified during the Byzantine period, the Venetian period and the first centuries of the Ottoman rule. The fortress that we see today was built by the Turks in 1684, in order to protect Chalkis from the Venetians. It was designed by Venetian Gerolimo Galopo based on European standards. The fort was unsuccessfully besieged by Morosini in 1688 and the Turks managed to keep it until the liberation of Greece, when they handed it over to the Greek state.

Karababa castle is located on Fourka hill of the Boeotian coast. Its location is strategic, as it oversees the Strait of Evripos and the town of Chalkis. The southern part of the wall is maintained in good condition and you can also see two Russian cannons of the 19th century. The only gate of the fortress is located on the Southeast side of the wall where you will also find other military buildings.

On the east wall of the yard, between the gate and the east tower, you can see the bell tower, which is the only well-preserved building and which dates back to 1895. The western end of the wall is occupied by a tower with seven sides, proof of the highly defensive construction of the fortress. The entrance to the tower is through a narrow vaulted corridor, which looks like a maze.
