Ag. Irini Church, Kampos

This is one of the most important post-Byzantine monuments of Ikaria, built on the ruins of an early Christian basilica, parts of which can still be seen today in various places. The church had previously been dated to the 9th-10th c., but a recent reevaluation suggests it is a construction of the 11th-12th century. The church is a four-column cruciform. It is rectangular, with a towering dome. The corner rooms have pitched roofs, while in the east there is an arch. On the west side of the temple there is a narthex. The roof of the church is covered with schist slates and the walls are coated with gold.
