Paleokastro

This is a semi ruined castle which was built on top of the mountain of Agios Stefanos at a height of 295 m. Although it is not in good condition, the castle is one of the best preserved castles of Tilos. In the same place there used to be a Hellenistic acropolis, remains of which are visible till nowadays. The castle covers an area of 6,750 m2 and the perimeter of the walls is 390 m. The gate dates back to the Hellenistic period, but was modified by the Knights in order to reduce the height of the opening. Above the entrance the Knights added a parapet with battlements and a small gun-loop. Probably the entire perimeter of the wall was equipped with battlements but we can only see their remnants today. The castle had a good defensive position and was made of stones available in the region. In the interior you can still see the cisterns and the Church of Taxiarches which have been preserved till nowadays. The castle overlooks the bays of Agios Antonis and Eristos and the island of Nissiros.
