Monastery of the Assumption

The Monastery of Panagia is dedicated to the Assumption. It is located 10 km. far from the city. It is estimated that it was built in 1780. The architect of the church was Roumeliotis who built the church to resemble the monasteries of Mount Athos. When the island was being destroyed, the Turks set the Church on fire to destroy and loot it. However, the monastery was spared temporarily thanks to beehives that the monks threw at the enemy. In the library of the monastery you can see rare manuscripts and books printed in Venice and Moscow. There was also a picture of the Virgin Mary signed by Dominikos Theotokopoulos (also known as El Greco). The inhabitants who escaped the destruction of the island wanted to save the painting and thus, took it to Syros where it can still be seen nowadays.
