Kontias

This is one of the most beautiful and biggest villages of the island. It is built right next to a green hill with pines and cypresses. You will enjoy walking down the cobblestoned streets and admiring the stone houses with the colored shutters (the most beautiful examples of the traditional architecture of Lemnos), the ornate neoclassical marble corbels, the orchards of orange and lemon trees, the old distillery, the lemonades workshop which dates back to 1954, the grocery stores, the cafes and the taverns. If you happen to be in the village during the spring, you will be enchanted by the scent of the blooming lilacs.

Also you can visit the oldest church of the village, Saint John the Baptist, which looks more like a fortress than a church as it has cannons and battlements. The church of St. Demetrios is equally interesting even if it is a quite recent construction. Another interesting place to visit is the Gallery of Contemporary Balkan art which was founded by the cultural association of the village. Finally, do not forget to visit the five windmills which have now been converted into traditional guesthouses.
