Arkadi Monastery & Olive Museum

This is probably the most popular monastery in Rethymno due to its historical value. During the fights for the Cretan liberation in 1866 the place was burnt to the ground. It was built during the 16th century and is a stereotypical example of the monastic architecture of the era. It is also protected by Unesco as a monument of freedom in Europe. The monastery is built on the plateau of Arcadi, 23 km. from Rethymno, and it stands out for its size and architecture. It is definitely worth the visit in order to admire the collection of religious manuscripts, vestments embroidered with gold, seals, manuscripts and other relics and works of art created by monks.

Here you will also find the Olive Museum, the restored olive mill of the monastery. In its rooms you will see the cell of the monk who is responsible for the production and what was used as a processing space until the early 20th century. Admission is free.
