Arhanes

Awarded by the European Union as a model traditional village, the town of Arhanes is the "gem" of Heraklion. Situated at an altitude of 380 meters and surrounded by mountains, it offers its visitors a breathtaking view. Its history dates back to the Minoan times and you can learn all about it by visiting the museums of the area and admiring the architecture around the town. In Arhanes you can also find the oldest wine press in Europe and visit the traditional olive and wine presses of the area. Don’t forget to taste the award winning wines and the traditional Cretan cuisine in the village square. If you are there in the summer, you can also take part in the festival of Arhanes and participate in the harvesting of grapes and other agricultural activities. Silamiano gorge nearby is an excellent place to visit if you love hiking.
