Archaeological Museum of Poros

The Archaeological Museum of Poros was built between 1967 and 1968 at the location of the old house of Alexander Korizis (Prime Minister of Greece in 1941), which was donated to the Greek State by his heirs. In the museum there are two exhibition halls, one on the ground floor and one on the first floor, hosting exhibits from the region of Troezen, and the findings of the old excavations of Philadelphus at Hermione.

The ground floor exhibition includes sculptures and inscriptions from Troezen, Kalavreia and Methana. In the lobby of the room there is the relief of a dog, carved on stone. It was found in Fousa valley (near Ano Fanari village), which is an area well known because of the existence of an ancient settlement and cemetery. In the lobby you will also see a copy of the famous Troezen column with the text of the Athenian resolution proposed by Themistocles in 480 BC in order to deal with the Persian invasion. The original of this column is located in the Epigraphic Museum of Athens.

The inscriptions exhibited also include the funeral badge of Androcles (son of Evmaris) who was found in Methana, an honorary resolution of Troezen concerning Echilaos Filonidos from Plataea (369 BC), and the inscribed pedestal of the bronze statue of emperor Marcus Aurelius (175-180 AD).

The sculptures of the classical period are represented by two statues (a naked boy and a woman with chiton and himation and a statuette of Asclepius) and some tombstones of the 4th century BC. The majority of the tombstones of Troezen date back to imperial times. The sepulchral column of Xenocrates is of particular interest due to the inscription which explains how he was killed in battle for his country (3rd century BC).

The three main architectural styles of capitals and their evolution from the Archaic to the Roman times, are represented by the findings in the Sanctuary of Poseidon at Kalavreia: a Doric 6th century BC capital, a Doric 5th century BC capital and an Ionic 4th century BC capital.
