Archaeological Museum of Mykonos

The Archaeological Museum of Mykonos was built in the early 20th century at Kamnaki, in a dominant position above the harbor. The initial purpose of this building was to house the findings of the "Pit of purification" (5th century) which was discovered in 1898 in Rheni. The big collection of vessels is particularly representative of the Cycladic pottery from the Geometric period until the 6th century B.C.

In the museum you will also find wonderful black and red ceramics and funerary engravings and sculptures of the Hellenic era. The most impressive finding in Mykonos is the great "Pithos of Mykonos" (pithamphorae made in a workshop on Tinos - 7th century B.C.). On it you will see scenes from the Trojan War, divided into time periods (in the center there are the Achaeans warriors with the Trojan Horse).
