Ancient Acropolis at the Castle

The ancient Acropolis at the Castle is surrounded by a wall, parts of which are still visible nowadays. The wall is long and reaches the traditional village of the Castle which is inhabited until today. Recent excavations revealed parts that are over 4 m. high, and this gave some light concerning the period when the monument was constructed. Also, based on the excavations of the English School inside the Acropolis it seems that the beginning of its construction dates back to the late 6th century B.C. This monumental construction ensured the protection of the Acropolis, but it also highlighted the economic wealth of the island.
